College Invest will be presenting information about how to pay for college.  Plan on attending Hinkley High School's Financial Aid informational night for Spanish speaking families Wednesday, January 13th from 6-7:30 p.m.

January 27th from 6-8 p.m. College Invest will be sponsoring a Financial Aid Workshop to help families fill out the FAFSA forms for college.  See the flier below for the list of things to bring to the workshop:

The CSU Alliance High School survey is now ready for students.  This year we have gone back to hosting the survey on Student Voice (like it was done the first year).  Student Voice has a more user friendly interface that we hope will make taking the survey easier for students.

Wendy’s Heisman Award Program: To apply you must be senior athlete who has at least a B average and participate in one school-sponsored sport.  Students must have a school representative (counselor/teacher) review and confirm their online application before October 6th.  You will be able to track your progress.  If you have more questions call 1-800-205-6367.  Deadline is October 1st, 2009 The ONLINE application must be completed by students by 4:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m. central time) October 1st, 2009.

Horatio Alger Scholarship: The eligibility criteria to be considered for National Scholarships and Horatio Alger State Scholarship Programs are as follows:

  • enrollment full time as a high school senior, progressing normally toward graduation in the Spring/Summer 2010, with plans to enter college no later than the fall following graduation;
  • a strong commitment to pursuing and completing a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution located in the United States (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution. Idaho, Louisiana, and Montana state scholarship recipients must pursue and complete a degree at specific colleges and universities. Please see the individual program description for those requirements);
  • critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred, if higher explanation must be provided);
  • involvement in co-curricular and community activities;
  • demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity
  • a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0; and
  • United States Citizenship.

Remember Applications are due October 30, 2009! This is a deadline for two items: First, this is the last day you can edit your application and essays online. After this date, the applications will be closed. Secondly, this is a postmark deadline for all of your supplemental materials. Gathering the signatures and tax forms, takes some effort, so be sure not to wait until the last day to start!  Questions?  1-866-763-9228

Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation (we had a winner last year!):  $10,000-20,000

  • You must be:
    • CURRENT high school senior• U.S. Citizens; U.S. Nationals; U.S. Permanent Residents; Temporary Residents (in a legalization program); Refugees; Asylees; Cuban-Haitian Entrants; or Humanitarian Parolees
    • anticipating completion of high school diploma at the time of application
    • planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution
    • carrying a minimum 3.00 GPA at the end of their junior year of high school
  • Applicants cannot be children or grandchildren of employees, officers or owners of Coca−Cola bottling companies

Microsoft Scholarship & Internship:  We’re making it easier for future computer scientists to excel in what they love to do. Microsoft is offering four different types of technical scholarships for the 2010-2011 academic year to current undergraduate students: General Scholarships, Women's Scholarships, Minority Scholarships, and Scholarships for Students with Disabilities. To be eligible, you must be enrolled full time in a Bachelor's degree program at a 4-year college or university in the United States, Canada, or Mexico at the time you submit the application, satisfactorily progressing toward an undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline such as electrical engineering, math, or physics—and that you demonstrate an interest in computer science. You must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 4.0.  Visit www.microsoft.com/college/ss_overview.mspx click on the tab “Life@microsoft” and then scroll down to “scholarships”.  Then begin reading the “Never Stop Learning” and the requirements and how to apply will appear.  Deadline is February 1st.

Gates Millennium Scholars Program: “Full Ride” to the school of your choice.  Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they:

  • Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian Pacific Islander American** or Hispanic American
  • Are a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States
  • Have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3 on an unweighted scale
  • Will be enrolling in the fall 2010
  • Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities
  • Meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria (see counselor or FAFSA website)
  • Have completed and submitted all three required forms (Nominee Personal Information Form, Nominator Form, and Recommender Form) by the deadline of January 11th, 2010.  You will NEED and MUST select to fill out the form.  It is your duty to ensure they have the correct information and enough time complete  it.
  • This application is time-consuming.  Do not procrastinate!!!  January 11th is the deadline

UNCF Target Community Leaders Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to deserving students that are enrolled at UNCF colleges and universities with an unmet financial need and have demonstrated a commitment to giving back to their communities. The recipients of this award will be known as "Target Community Leaders". Eight students will be selected for the 2009-2010 academic year and each will receive a scholarship of up to $5,000.

Ron Brown Scholar Program: The Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. Hispanic Scholarship Fund (you do not need to be Hispanic to apply!!): Using Hispanic Scholarship Fund website you can LITERALLY apply to several scholarships at once and you have access to many scholarships at once.  CHECK OUT this website and create an account at www.hsf.net.  DEADLINES for scholarships are coming NOW.

Dell Scholars Program: www.dellscholars.org

  • Participating in a Michael & Susan Dell Foundation approved college readiness program for a minimum of two years (i.e. Gear Up, AVID, AP, Upward Bound)
  • Graduating from an accredited high school this academic year Earning a minimum of a 2.4 GPA
  • Demonstrated need for financial assistance
  • Planning to enter a bachelor's degree program at an accredited higher education institution in the fall directly after your graduation from high school.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency
  • Application to Open on November 1, 2009

Hispanic College Fund (not just for Hispanic students!): Visit their website for multiple scholarship opportunities and links to even more! HCF Applications CANNOT be completed last minute.Recommenders need at least 2 weeks warning to write a thorough and useful letter and transcripts usually take 2-3 weeks for a school to process and mail. Still not sure if you are eligible? All you have to do is start the application and after filling out your profile the application system will automatically tell you for which programs you qualify!  New Applications for 2009-2010 scholarships will open November 16th.

McDonald’s Education Scholarships: Open November 9th.  Requirements are as follows: Be a high school senior. Be eligible to attend a two- or four-year college or university with a full course of study.   Be a legal U.S. resident.  Live in a participating RMHC Chapter’s geographic area.  Submit a complete application and all required documentation by the deadline on the application.   Meet any additional eligibility requirements outlined by each scholarship program. The UNCF/Merck Science Initiative (UMSI) provides undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral support to outstanding African-American students who are pursuing studies and research careers in biological and chemical sciences. Every year, scholarships are awarded through a national competition. Awards offer excellent advantages that get you ahead in your academic life and career:

  • Funds that cover tuition, fees, and room and board and more. Up to $25,000 for undergrads, $52,000 for grad students, and $85,000 for postdoctoral researchers.
  • Summer internships at one of four Merck research facilities with stipends totaling $10,000 (for undergraduates only).
  • Close mentoring relationships with Merck scientists.

American Indian College Fund: Visit www.collegefund.org for participating tribal colleges and listings of scholarship opportunities.

Greenhouse Scholars: This is an excellent scholarship that not only provides financial support, but also provides the winner with mentorship, internship, a summer symposium, peer support, and a professional liaison/mentor.  This is a great opportunity…start early on the application.

:: Have an unweighted GPA of 3.5 or above
:: Demonstrate a strong interest and commitment to the community
